The man singing next to me was more than a little off key and singing louder than strictly necessary. I stood there dripping in sweat with a child asleep on top of me and one leaning against me, totally in awe of the situation. YWAM Port Au Prince is camped out in an orphanage and we had the privilege of sitting in on a worship time. Orphans, Haitians, YWAM volunteers all standing together worshiping God whole heartedly. As people sang out about God being good, holy, and a provider my heart was rocked. Mere months after a tragedy that left this land devastated people praised God, and thanked him for the breaking of their hearts and the rebuilding that is about to happen in their nation. It was humbling to see the devotion. The only request made of us was one of begging for prayer.
Every tent city that we have gone to people cried out about the injustices that plaque them, but when asked what we can do they don´t ask for money, or food they ask for prayer. They sing and worship with the kind of abandon I´ve rarely seen. I wish I could report that we have fed every child here, that we´ve built homes for every family that lost one. I believe that those things will come. But right now, and I think more importantly for this stage of Haiti, we have been able to offer prayer and join in worship with each of the Haitians we have met. God is bringing about a devotion to him among the people. Amidst the confusion of the country, the waiting, heat, and mosquitoes our team is able to be apart of that. |
