"People who do not know the Lord ask why in the world we waste our lives as missionaries. They forget that they too are expending their lives ... and when the bubble has burst, they will have nothing of eternal significance to show for the years they have wasted." - Nate Saint

Mission Adventures interview with Jonathan Newsom, Navarre United Methodist Church. Navarre, FL.

1. Have you ever done a Mission Adventures outreach or other short-term mission before? If so, where and when? Yes. This was my fourth year in a row doing MA with YWAM Orlando. Our church has done MA outreaches to Miami, twice to Key West, Brazil, Nicaragua and now Panama.

2. Why did you decide to go on a short-term outreach? To expose our Youth to missions work and allow them to take that next step in their walk with Christ.

3. You could have gone on any number of short-term outreaches. What was it about Mission Adventures that helped you decide to come on this trip? I love the training beforehand. It really pumps you up and prepares you for battle.

4. Tell us about the service you received. What did YWAM do for you? YWAM is amazing. The staff, and interns are all wonderful examples for our young people.

5. What was the most significant thing your kids learned during the live training? How about you- what did you learn? I think the training opened the eyes of our youth to the real world and what life is like for other people and what it really means to be a Christian. For me it was a good refresher (everyone needs that every now and then).

6. Was the training you received effective? Did it help prepare your team for the outreach? The training was very effective.

7. What was the highlight of your outreach? The highlight of our Panama Outreach was going to the village of San Juan de Piconi and living in the Villiage for a day and a night. I wish we could have stayed there at least one more day because we were just beginning to form relationships.

8. Tell us about your team. How did your kids grow as a result of this experience? How did you grow? This outreach was an eye-opener for all of our kids because none of them have ever been on an out of country mission trip before. One of our kids in preticular was a shy quite guy before this trip and this experience has really brought him out of his shell.

9. Would you go on another Mission Adventures outreach? Why or why not? Yes, because we love you guys

10. Would you recommend Mission Adventures to another youth worker? Why or why not? I would and I have

11. Anything you’d like to add? If there were anything I could change I would add more hands on work because that always seems to be the thing that always stands out in our kids minds and is the highlight for them.

Mission Adventures interview with Andy Ard, Abundant Life Church, Sarasota, FL

Panama – June 19th – June 30th, 2006

  1. Have you ever done a Mission Adventures outreach or other short-term mission before? If so, where and when?

Yes, we have gone to Nicaragua in 2002, Brazil in 2004, and Panama & Key West in 2006.

    2.  Why did you decide to go on a short-term outreach?

Short term missions is so vital in a young persons walk with Christ. It hits so many important marks in their lives, socially, culturally, and most of all spiritually, the change that occurs in the process of two weeks is amazing and can only happen when you take them out of their environment and into someone else’s. To see teenagers serve in another country and the passion and desire that they come home with is amazing. I believe this will only happen on short term outreach.

    3.  You could have gone on any number of short-term outreaches. What was it about Mission Adventures that helped you decide to come on this trip?

Knowing I didn’t have to worry about the logistics was number one the first year, after that it has been the passion behind the training time in Orlando.  Every year we bring our group and God explodes in their hearts changing them forever. I’ll go anywhere for outreach but the only place I want to go for training is YWAM Orlando.

4.  Tell us about the service you received. What did YWAM do for you?

I’ve always been impressed by the heart behind the service more than the service it self. Its outreach and I don’t expect great service or things to run smoothly but I know I can count on the heart of the YWAM staff and the personal relationships that they build with myself and those in my groups.

5.  What was the most significant thing your kids learned during the live training? How about you- what did you learn?

Every year God shows us we can have open hearts to hear Him. Most of the time teenagers are caught up in their own world. The training time forces them to stop and really listen to God, so much is revealed during this time and now even several weeks after our trip my youth are still giving great reports of things God is revealing to them as they listen to Him.

6.  Was the training you received effective? Did it help prepare your team for the outreach?

Training is always extremely effective and motivating, I wouldn’t do a trip without it. We wouldn’t be half as prepared if it weren’t for the training. For me the hardest part about short term missions isn’t the outreach itself it’s getting the hearts of the team prepared, the training time alleviates that pressure.

7.  What was the highlight of your outreach?

The time spent in the Indian village in Panama. Our youth will never be the same because of that experience.

8.  Tell us about your team. How did your kids grow as a result of this experience? How did you grow?

The kids grew in various ways, some were able to forgive hurts, some were healed of hurts, some were given a boldness to share their faith, and for some it’s now second nature. We just did an outreach night in our Wed. night service and had thirty first time kids, I believe this is a result of the impact that our youth received in Panama and Key West.

9.  Would you go on another Mission Adventures outreach? Why or why not?

Yes, for all of the reasons I have stated in the other questions, it’s the best way to allow for the most impact on a missions experience, you all have the full package.

10.  Would you recommend Mission Adventures to another youth worker? Why or why not?

    Yes, and already have.

11. Anything you’d like to add?

Just want to say thank you for your servant hood and the hearts behind it. Know that the lives you are touching will have an eternal impact, my desire for a missions experience is that it has eternal impact, that the kids will live out the changes the received on the trip. I want different kids to come home then the ones I left with. Because of your obedience and sacrifice that has happened once again and I thank you for it. Last night at Youth Group one of the girls said goodbye to our group after seven years to start medical school in Georgia, God revealed to her on a missions adventure trip to Nicaragua in 2002 that she was going to be a doctor. She was changed forever and you all had a part in that. THANK YOU!

Mission Adventures interview with Andy Cartee, First United Methodist Church Winter Park, Winter Park, FL

Panama – June 19th – June 30th, 2006

  1. Have you ever done a Mission Adventures outreach or other short-term mission before? If so, where and when?

Yes I have done a Missions Adventures outreach before.  For the past 5 years we have taken groups to places such as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Miami, Key West, and Panama.

    2.  Why did you decide to go on a short-term outreach?

We decided to go on a short-term outreach for two reasons. One it was to help fulfill the Great Commission and two to provide a meaningful life changing experience for our students.  Many people know about the need in other countries but to experience it places a burden on your heart for those people. It is a burden similar to that of our Lord.

3.  You could have gone on any number of short-term outreaches. What was it about Mission Adventures that helped you decide to come on this trip?

What helped me to come on this trip with Mission Adventures was a consistency over the years in their approach to missions.  Many other organizations do not have the training and spiritual influx that happens with the students at the beginning of the week.  I am sold out on the vision and purpose of YWAM!

4.  Tell us about the service you received. What did YWAM do for you?

YWAM created an environment and opportunity for meeting the students where they were at and empowering them to do missions in this world.  For me personally, it was refreshing to know that I could be with my students and invest in them while YWAM took care of all of the logistics and details.

5.  What was the most significant thing your kids learned during the live training? How about you- what did you learn?

I would say that it was not so much what the kids learned during live training but what they were shown.  They were shown Christian Community, worship that takes them outside of themselves and focuses on Christ, the truth about our world, and most importantly how to impact the world for Christ.  What I learned was to not be so consumed with my world and my view of how things should be but to focus and see the world through the eyes of our savior and allow Him to direct how things should be.

6.  Was the training you received effective? Did it help prepare your team for the outreach?

The training we received was very effective.  The training helped prepare our team for their outreach and gave them confidence in what they were doing because it empowered them with a true passion for seeing others come to know our Lord and Savior.

7.  What was the highlight of your outreach?

The highlight of our outreach was to see the lives that were impacted.  Even if it was only to plant a seed, no doubt God worked in mighty ways as He always does.

8.  Tell us about your team. How did your kids grow as a result of this experience? How did you grow?

We had a great team of 8 students and 4 adults.  The students grew in so many ways through this experience.  In giving God their time for the trip, silence to listen to Him, and most importantly their heart, they became passionate about what God is passionate about, and that is people.  I grew in my own personal way through seeing God at work in the lives of the people we were with and in the lives of our students.

9.  Would you go on another Mission Adventures outreach? Why or why not?

I would go and will go on another Mission Adventures outreach!!  I am 100% convinced that YWAM seeks to bring Christ to the whole world and that the vision and passion they have is contagious and truly creates opportunities for people to come to know HIM.

10.  Would you recommend Mission Adventures to another youth worker? Why or why not?

I would recommend Mission Adventures to any other youth worker because the whole experience truly allows students to get a snapshot of the heart of God and when they see it then it empowers them to go back and change their group, community, nation, and world with the Gospel. Students walk away not just with a good experience but with a life-changing one.

LETTER FROM YOUTH

I would just like to say that the staff there were the best staff I have ever had the opportunity of working with on a mission trip. You seemed more like friends then counselors. Anyways, God really did change my heart, I now see that Christianity isn’t just all about what you do and don’t do, or not just about being good, but it’s a relationship that we can have with our Creator, God, and Savior. This seems to be a simple lesson that God has been revealing to me over the years, and yet on this mission trip, while serving and evangelizing for God, He didn’t just work through me but in me as well. I will keep you all in my prayers. Hope to one day run into some of the staff just to thank them personally for their impact on my life. Brett - Florida

STAFF/INTERN STORIES

Broken, lonely, scared, these are just a few words to describe a young girl. She came through this summer on what she thought would be another “church” function. She had been smoking since she was eight years old and doing cocaine and weed. When she arrived my heart went out for her. I began asking God to deliver her of her drug addiction. I was asking God “Please give me Your heart for her”. God did and He began to show me how to pray for her. I entered into the room after we had prayed and this girl was the first person to look at me. I felt a pull to go talk with her and share what God had shown me. I went and sat next to her and immediately she hugged me and began to weep and weep. She had not cried in years. She hadn’t felt emotion in so long. She was telling me through her tears “I feel different, clean, I feel God’s love. I don’t feel the need or desire to do drugs, I want to change.” She didn’t believe that it could happen. Being able to hold her and pray with her was the best feeling in the world!!! Knowing and seeing God’s love heal a broken heart and restore her soul was amazing. She gave her heart to God, and is changing old habits and breaking routines. She is so hungry to know God and His love!! Monica - Staff The most impacting part of my summer was a moment I was able to witness and be something like a doctor’s assistant in surgery. My outreach was in Key West and on the team was a man named Chuck who had a servant heart like Jesus’. One day we were feeding the homeless, performing dramas, and sharing testimonies. I was sitting next to a man named Jay and we began to talk about his life. Chuck came up to us and asked if he could clean up a bad wound Jay had on his knee. As Chuck did this, he saw another wound on Jay’s foot. Chuck asked me to run and get supplied so he could wash Jay’s feet and clean this wound. Sadly, Jay had been hit by a car and this wound was not properly cleaned. Both Chuck and I knew that if Jay did not see a doctor, the infection would spread and eventually he would lose his foot. We did all we could to clean it and convince Jay to go to the hospital. We prayed and asked God to heal him. Chuck and his team went home. God is amazing. I saw Jay’s face as Chuck washed his feet and cleaned his infected wound. God washes us and cleans our sins and we are healed. Thankfully, one week later, I was in Key West with another team and I saw Jay again. A cleaned-up, clear-eyed, fully healed foot Jay. He told me about his week and how God moved in his life and changed him. Witnessing this story I will never forget inspires me to continue doing those things the rest of my life. Lisa-Staff
